Eyecare clinic ‘one of the best workplaces for women’

Eyecare clinic Newmedica Plymouth has been named one of the UK’s Best Workplaces for Women 2025. The award recognises the firm’s commitment to championing gender equality, supporting women’s career development and fostering an inclusive work environment.

Shannon Page joined 18 months ago as an ophthalmic assistant before progressing to be a service engagement co-ordinator.

She says: “I feel recognised, appreciated, supported and listened to on a daily basis, so I’m very pleased to hear about this award because it really is deserved.

“I feel like I can further my career within the organisation and no goal is too big. In my short time at Newmedica, I have already proved that you are valued as an employee and encouraged to grow within the business.”

The clinic provides treatments for cataracts and other eye conditions, to both private and NHS patients.

Optometrist Frances Calladine has been with the clinic for one year. She started her career as an optical assistant and went on to the University of Plymouth to do an optometry degree. She’s worked in independent opticians and big businesses

Since joining Newmedica Plymouth, Frances has qualified to perform laser surgery on patients and is taking an independent prescribing qualification at the City of London University.

Opportunities and support

She says the firm “is great for providing opportunities. I have already achieved so much in 12 months, and I know there is so much more to come. Not only does Newmedica recognise the importance of training, they appreciate you and they provide you with personal and professional support, making it a very rewarding and enjoyable job role.”

The company has already been named among the Top 50 UK’s Best Workplaces 2025 and UK’s Best Workplaces for Development earlier this year.

Caroline Harris, service manager at the clinic, says: ‘We are so proud of Frances, Shannon and our team as a whole.

“Getting recognition as one of the UK’s Best Workplaces for Women is testament to the inclusive, empowering culture we strive for every day, and Frances and Shannon’s journeys with us are among many that we’re delighted about.”

The awards are run by Great Place to Work, which certifies companies for employee wellbeing.
