Retail could be the perfect place to start your working life. Our top tips from the Careers in Eyecare experts can help you get the job you want.

If you are passionate about people, love checking out the latest products or have a head for business, there’s a store that’ll be the perfect environment for you.

But how do you make sure that you will nail that dream job? What are the key qualities that help you get ahead?

The key is to focus on the four Ps of face-to-face retail.

1. Presentable

Look at the staff who are working in the business already. Stroll into the shop and check them out. What are they wearing? Every retail outlet has a different dress code. Some provide staff with a uniform, while others give an allowance for clothes from their range. Whatever you are asked to wear, you will need to be presentable.

If you are interviewed for a retail role check that your look is similar to the existing staff – if you want a job in a skateboard shop what you wear will be very different to working in an opticians.

2. Punctual

Make sure you are on time. Punctuality is important, as shops have set opening hours. In your job application you may want to mention examples that show you are punctual – have you reliably turned up on time for a voluntary position or for work experience? Make sure you arrive a little early for your job interview.

3. Professional

Imagine being asked the same question ten times a day. Sometimes you will be faced by customers who want to know things that may seem obvious to you.

You will need to respond politely and cheerfully to every customer, from the first person you speak to in the morning to the browser who needs to be encouraged to leave at the end of the day. You might need to give answers which represent your employer’s views rather than your own – all part of being professional.

4. Passionate

Having a positive attitude from the start can help you find the good things in even the most routine role. You might love chatting to customers and making friends with your colleagues. Or have a passion for the stuff your company sells, whether that’s food or fashion, gaming, sports or tech.

The best retail workers love the products they sell, know everything about them, and can share that enthusiasm with customers.

As your career develops, your passion will only grow. Someone who works in an opticians, for example, could move from a role as an optical assistant to become a dispensing optician or practice manager, gaining professional or management qualifications while they work.
