Specsavers reach out
Experts from Specsavers have been inspiring the next generation to consider a career in optics.
A team from the practice in Stamford, Lincolnshire, visited Stamford College for a careers fair. They talked to students about the diverse and rewarding pathways available in optics at the firm and encouraged them to prioritise their eye health.
“Building connections with the local community is extremely important to us, so being invited to the careers fair was a real privilege,” said practice director Hannah Smallwood.
“We had a lovely afternoon talking with some fantastic students about the careers available in optics. I hope we we’re able to inspire the next generation to consider our industry as an option when they leave college.”
The team also reminded learners that eye examinations and any necessary glasses are fully funded by the NHS if they’re under 19 and in full-time education.
Make the most of careers fairs
If you are planning to go to a local jobs fair, here’s how to make the most of the opportunities available. The best way to stand out is to prepare thoroughly.
Before the fair
- write or update your CV. Have copies ready to give to employers
- memorise a short introduction. What’s your elevator pitch?
- practise answering common interview questions
- look at the list of companies that will be there. Decide who you want to speak to
- research those firms so you can show you know something about their business when you talk to employers
- plan some questions to ask the people you want to speak to
On the day
To make the most of the opportunities on offer:
- use the introduction you prepared to get started
- speak to companies you’re interested in. Ask them questions
- find out people’s names and ask to connect on LinkedIn
- take notes so you can remember important details and names
- look at any free services, such as CV checking or careers advice
Next steps
Follow up the connections you made:
- message people to say thank you for their time
- ask any follow up questions you have
- apply for jobs with the companies that interested you
- don’t be afraid to contact any companies you did not get a chance to speak to at the fair. It’s a good way to start a conversation with an employer you’re interested in.
Reflect
Think about how the day and learn from the experience.
- are you looking for jobs in the right place?
- do you need to develop or improve your skills?
- did you meet the goal you set yourself?
- consider speaking to a careers adviser for support
