Careers fairs are great opportunities for you to meet employers. They take place in person or online. They can also be called job fairs or recruitment events.
Find out about local careers fairs through:
- school, college or university
- your local Jobcentre Plus
- social media posts about work in your area
Preparing for a jobs fair will help you make the most of the opportunities available.
Set a goal
Think about a realistic target. What would you like to achieve at the event? This keeps you focused and helps you reflect after the day.
Realistic goals might include:
- learning about a company you’re interested in and how to apply for jobs
- speaking to three people from different firms
- getting three names you can connect with on LinkedIn, the professional networking site.
Be prepared
The best way to stand out is to prepare thoroughly.
- write or update your CV. Have copies ready to give to employers
- create or update a LinkedIn profile
- memorise a short introduction. What’s your elevator pitch?
- practise answering common interview questions
- look at the list of companies that will be there. Decide who you want to speak to
- research those firms so you can show you know something about their business when you talk to employers
- plan some questions to ask the people you want to speak to
During a careers fair
To make the most of the opportunities on offer:
- use the introduction you prepared to get started
- speak to companies you’re interested in. Ask them questions
- find out people’s names and ask to connect on LinkedIn
- take notes so you can remember important details and names
- look at any free services, such as CV checking or careers advice
After the event
Follow up the connections you made:
- message people to say thank you for their time
- ask any follow up questions you have
- apply for jobs with the companies that interested you
Don’t be afraid to contact any companies you did not get a chance to speak to at the fair. It’s a good way to start a conversation with an employer you’re interested in.
Reflect on the day
Think about how the day and learn from the experience.
- are you looking for jobs in the right place?
- do you need to develop or improve your skills?
- did you met the goal you set yourself?
- consider speaking to a careers adviser for support
