If you want to do a degree in medicine, ophthalmic dispensing or optometry, and you have been offered a place, make sure that you apply for student finance too. New students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan – for your fees – and a Maintenance Loan – for your living costs.

- Check what identity documents you’ll need to apply. For most students this can be a valid UK Passport number on your application
- Speak to your parents or partner as you will need their need their National Insurance number if you’re applying for funding based on your household income
Most full-time and part-time students who are from or normally live in England can apply online to Student Finance England. Here’s how:
- Set up a student finance online account.
- Log in and complete the online application.
- Include your household income if needed. Your parent or partner will be asked to confirm these details.
- Send in proof of identity, if needed.
Applications are open now, and you can apply up to 9 months after the start of the academic year for your course. Its helpful to get your application in as soon as possible to ensure your money comes through at the start of term when you need to pay for your accommodation.
One more thing to remember – you need to apply every year for student finance. If you’re a continuing student who’s from or normally lives in England, you should log in to your student finance account and apply online.
